The MusicRebetika, sometimes called the Greek blues, originated in the early 1900s in the cities near the Aegean sea--cities such as Athens, Istanbul, and Smyrna (modern day Izmir). A musical mixture of east and west, and in a sense, the original fusion, rebetika both delights the ear and touches the heart. At times sorrowful, at others bawdy, the songs reflect the difficulties and joys of life in that era. The Smyrna Time Machine plays rebetika as well as the light-hearted and lilting dance music of the Aegean islands. The Smyrna Time Machine will accommodate you with heart-wrenching zembekika, sensuous tsiftetelia, sizzling karsilamades, and more. The Smyrna Time Machine is Rachel Valfer and Dennis Demakos (vocals), Paul Wernick (bouzouki), Juliet Lee (percussion), Daniel Eshoo (kanun), Alan Davidson (violin), Normand Bujold (guitar), and Matt Wright (oud & baglamas).
